If you depended on your spouse as the primary wage earner, it may be difficult to earn a living after the death of a spouse when faced with serious medical conditions of your own. After the death of your spouse, if you have become disabled and are between the ages of 50 and 60, you may be eligible for benefits as a disabled widow or widower.
